Flexitarians and Our Global Heritage

Here are my very cute Red Russian kale babies. Really, they are the most adorable things in the garden right now. But they are also an important link between the past and future since they are grown from heirloom seeds, as are many of the crops I choose for my garden.

My friends in Australia turned me on to www.seedsavers.net's 4-minute trailer for its upcoming movie, Guardians of the Seed (view it at the seedsavers.net site). Grab a cup of coffee or some herbal tea from the garden and enjoy. Then, remember that the only way to keep these living treasures alive is to plant them or to buy them when available at markets so that farmers have continuing incentives to help save our global heritage.

As a new vegetarian (almost seven months into my year-long experiment!), I am particularly enjoying searching out protein and calcium-packed ancient grains and a wide variety of nutrient-loaded greens and beans. If you don't want to be a Tofurkey vegetarian or one who eats pasta and cheese every night (or if you're a "flexitarian" working on keeping a few meals each week meat-free, as apparently 25% of Americans are), a plethora of these heirloom options makes it easy to keep the daily diet exciting, delicious and healthy.

I like the term flexitarian, it is a good description of what we try to do here.
