You see the gray color of these shadows? How would you like to have milk that color? Well, turns out that if you are a raw milk fan (and there is a growing legion of fans who are choosing unpasteurized milk from local farmers they know because of its richer taste and supposed numerous health benefits), this is what your raw milk in the states of Georgia and North Carolina will look like soon. That's because those two State Departments of Agriculture can't think of any other way to get consumers to stop buying raw milk. The requirement that the milk be labeled Pet Milk--Not for Human Consumption and the understanding that people who drink the milk themselves are assuming the risk is apparently not enough. Even those who actually use the milk for pets will now be feeding their pets this gray dye (I wrote to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin to ask what exactly is in the dye but have not yet received a response).
Think of it this way--what if the State Department of Agriculture decided to inject a dye into all eggs to remind people not to eat raw eggs? Or raw meat? Or raw chicken? Even if they have purchased them all legally? Where is the line on this issue?
I have mixed feelings about raw milk, but I have mixed feelings about bagged lettuce, too (here's a previous post I wrote about raw milk to give you a brief overview of the issue--for instance, the need for pasteurization arose because of unsanitary inner-city dairies, not because of small family farms). But I have no mixed feelings about free choice, as long as transparent, accurate information has been presented (no lying about tobacco ingredients or appetite-stimulating food additives, for instance).
The proposed Georgia regulation will not be voted on, but written comments are being accepted up until 4:30 PM Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at the following address:

As the growing crowd waited for Rock Star Chad's arrival at the Farmer's Market yesterday with their weekly supply of raw milk, this issue was all the buzz. I got to thinking about 1993, when growth hormones were first added to our nation's mass supply of milk and we sat and let it happen. And I thought about Aurora Dairies and its utter (or, shall we say, udder) refusal to abide by organic regulations, even though it is charging a premium to customers all over the country for milk that is labeled organic but is not. And I wonder what will happen this time, on a pure and natural product that is clearly labeled and is dependent on relationships between small farmers and local citizens, just as it has been for hundreds of years.
UPDATE--October 6, 2007According the yesterday's Atlanta Journal Constitution (and my fave journalist there, Elizabeth Lee):
A proposal to start dyeing raw milk to discourage human consumption has stirred up enough opposition that the Georgia Department of Agriculture has decided to hold a public hearing Nov. 2 . . . The hearing starts at 9 a.m. in Room 201 of the Agriculture Buidling, 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta.
UPDATE--October 8, 2007
Oh, my, my my. This is a very hot issue, gang. Check out this Atlanta Journal-Constitution blog.

We take part in a cowshare program at a local dairy and have been really happy with it. Especially my daughter, who enjoys seeing the cows that give her her milk every week.
Thankfully, the government is here to take care of me. I'm so happy to know that my government authorizes me to purchase:
- tobacco
- alcohol
- all the transfats I want
- all the chemical wonders of our pharmaceutical creations
- chemically sprayed produce
But, due to my inability to make good decisions, I'm not authorized to:
- purchase raw milk for my consumption
- purchase poultry and meat processed on farm unless the farmer has a state inspected facility
Like you Pattie, I don't say whether someone should drink raw milk or not. But it's an insult to suggest the government is better equipped than I am at deciding what is right for me to consume.

Your timing is incredible. I am reading What to Eat by Nina Planck and just finished the chapter on raw milk. I was taken back though with her outdated research and lack of any type of nutrition/dietician credentials. Regardless, I continue to read on and agree with many of her points in the book. My mom says she may have to turn the other cheek if I start drinking raw milk. I can take that from her but by no means can the government tell me what I can and cannot drink. Lucky for me I live in Washington state where it is still legal.
Luckily, we are allowed to sell our raw milk in TX under a Grade A Raw-Retail permit from the Health Department. They do make it a huge pain, though. If anyone is interested in milk, cream, or butter, or would like to know more about us, email me: adam@dairyvets.ag
Denise,
Don't take Raw Milk in WA for granted. It too is under attack. Several raw milk dairies are being harassed by the WSDA and the USDA claiming they have listeria outbreaks and temporarily shutting them down when independent tests and common sense say otherwise.
Tim is right. It shouldn't be about whether anyone drinks Raw Milk or not, or eats Foie Gras or not, or gnaws on a Raw Turkey leg. It's about the right to choose what we eat, from where we get our food, and how we eat it.
If the government can say that you can't drink Raw Milk, then they say you can't eat Foie Gras, then TransFats, and what next? Farm raised produce? Home grown lettuce? Venison from a hunting trip? The more power they have, the more they will take away at the behest of the Multinational Food Corporations.
That is what is behind Animal ID, the attack on Raw Milk, and the growing war on Farmers' Markets. We can vote with our purchases and our wallets and the corporations hate that. Buying Locally is costing the Multinationals $3 billion a year and they hate that. There is a vicious campaign brewing against Farmers' Markets using food miles, further pollution, sickness and unsafe products as the threat and publicity smear. Raw Milk is the foot hold in this door.
Whether you agree with drinking raw milk or not, thank you for championing the rights for everyone to make the choice for themselves!
Does anyone know where to purchase raw milk in the Raleigh area? Please email me at uponthesolidrock@gmail.com. Thanks!
The country that says "High fructose corn syrup is perfectly healthy" Has NO standing whatsoever to judge raw milk.
I truly believe people should be able to care for themselves and their families as they see fit. I also would like to see the average Raw Milk enthusiast GO SEE WHERE YOUR MILK COMES FROM! I would NEVER consume something off the back of some guy's truck! Especially something as ,YES, potentially dangerous as raw dairy products! Do you KNOW the farmer? Have you SEEN the animals and how they are housed? Have you been invited to witness the milking to see FIRST HAND how carefully, and cleanly the milk is handled? I say all this NOT as an over zealous health food, germ freak, nut, but as a DAIRY PRODUCER! I have been running a small goat dairy,LICENSED for pet consumption, since 1997 selling raw goats' milk and I WANT my customers to inspect me! Ask me questions about how I do things. Come out DURING milking time! If where you are getting your raw milk from doesn't really want you dropping in, ask yourself WHY! I saw a post about a woman contracting TB from raw milk. Why don't you ask yourself "Why did I not educate myself and only purchase from certified and accredited dairies?" Herds that are state regulated and tested annually to be both TB and Brucellosis FREE! The only thing you are risking is you and your family's health as well as the raw milk industry of people who DO work VERY hard every day to produce a SAFE and WHOLESOME product, being put out of business due to some uneducated person getting sick from some producer who is just trying to make a quick buck by riding on the coat tails of the raw dairy movement and NOT caring about the people they sell to or the industry they affect.
It IS Sunday, SO,... there is my SERMON for today.
