This is my mother, whom you have met in several stories of mine this past week. Yesterday, she joined my daughters and me at Team Chicken. Here is she is, just after sweeping out the coop. Happy.
As my younger daughter said when we went out for a snack after hanging out with the chickens for a very long while, "This is one of the best days of my life." As my mother said, "I love to join all of you on your adventures."
Right now, my mother is in the hospital, with several broken bones, on her way into surgery. Her car was hit by someone who ran a red light. A very kind man named Brian called me and told me how he witnessed the accident. How my mother's car spun around several times and is now completely totaled. How the man in the other car admitted to the police officer that he ran the light.
And so, as I wait, here with sleeping children, for my husband to call again from the hospital, I am braced for whatever I need to do to help my mother. But first, I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to this Brian, this stranger, who told me he was simply doing his civic duty.
Perhaps more of us can remember to do our civic duty when we are driving. When we are in a hurry. When we don't want to get stuck for that red light. Perhaps we can remember that the person in that other car is a grandmother. Or a dad. Or a sister. Or a friend. Perhaps we can remember that life is precious, and that it can be gone in a blink.
Perhaps we can just slow down.

Oh Pattie how awful! I wish her the speediest of recoveries. And I wish good thoughts for Brian, too; his impulse was beyond being merely "civic."
Pattie, I ache for you and your family - I hope you mom recovers quickly and well, and is back with all of you as soon as possible.

Oh, my goodness. Pattie, I hope your mom pulls through this with flying colors.
She has a gorgeous smile!
Pattie -
I am so sorry. We are all sending thoughts of healing your way. And let this serve as a reminder to all of us that life is precious and we must cherish all of the good times while they are happening...even as simple as sweeping out a chicken coop.
I'll keep you mom in my thoughts. I hope she will be ok.
You guys rock! Thank you. I told my mom about all these comments and it made her feel great. She has a long road ahead of her, but, like me, she tends to think of it more as a journey.
Maybe I'm being an optimist here, but I wager that guy who hit your mom feels just awful. I wager he's learned something pretty important from all this. I hope. I hope.
A lesson I take away from things like this is: "Don't let it take something drastic to get you to examine things more closely." I'm bad about that sometimes. Makes me a little scared to think of what I'm NOT thinking of!
And I'm sure your mom will heal well and quickly. She looks tough, healthy, and resilient!
Hang in there!

Oh, Pattie, I'm thinking of you and your Mom and your family. If there's anything I can do from the north, let me know?
It sounds as if the journey to recovery will be a long one, but also a beautiful opportunity.
