In order not to use the chicken pellets, you need land to have free range chickens or a cow or sheep of your own.... and still the chickens from the farms are making manure which, if those of us with small parcels of land don't use, becomes pollution somewhere else.I like to make use of waste and chicken pellets do that. They are not ideal but neither is it ideal for us to live in cities and overpopulate the world with people.....ideally we should all become hunters and gatherers again perhaps and rely on the survival of the fittest. The best we can do is cry out for an end to intensive chicken farming and in the meantime use the pellets.

I wrestle with this issue. Granted, we oppose the industrial method of raising chickens. But what exactly are the ethics of putting of the waste from that industry to good use? In our area, the White House indicates that it used crab meal from the Chesapeake Bay to fertilize Michelle Obama's garden. Some people have real issues with the way the crab industry is conducted. Does that make crab meal bad? In any case, I'll be darned if I can find a source for that crab meal.

Can you have a few backyard chickens? You'd have hormone free manuer, eggs, and you ouldn't have to cook them. Unless you're a spinner, the only other real purpose for keeping rabbits is meat production (or skins) and that leads to killing. Backyard chickens are win/win.
